To tow a trailer in Queensland, you must follow rules about registration, safety, and equipment.
Registration
- Both the vehicle and trailer must be registered and roadworthy
- The trailer must have a lit rear number plate
Safety
- Check your vehicle’s maximum towing weight
- Match the weight of your trailer to your vehicle’s towing capacity
- Distribute the weight of your trailer evenly
- Allow for longer stopping distances
- Take turns more slowly
- Avoid sudden manoeuvres
Equipment
- Use proper towing equipment, including tow bars, couplings, and safety chains
- Ensure all connections are secure
- Ensure the trailer’s braking system is functional
- Use suitable electrical sockets for trailer lighting
- Consider additional safety features like a reversing camera or trailer sway control systems
Driving
- Allow for the extra length and width of your vehicle when merging into traffic
- Be mindful of the trailer’s tendency to cut in on corners and curves
- Use a lower gear when going downhill
Other rules
- Towing more than one trailer is prohibited
- People are not permitted to ride in trailers
