Safety Towing Rules & Regulations

To tow a trailer in Queensland, you must follow rules about registration, safety, and equipment. 

  • Both the vehicle and trailer must be registered and roadworthy
  • The trailer must have a lit rear number plate
  • Check your vehicle’s maximum towing weight
  • Match the weight of your trailer to your vehicle’s towing capacity
  • Distribute the weight of your trailer evenly
  • Allow for longer stopping distances
  • Take turns more slowly
  • Avoid sudden manoeuvres
  • Use proper towing equipment, including tow bars, couplings, and safety chains
  • Ensure all connections are secure
  • Ensure the trailer’s braking system is functional
  • Use suitable electrical sockets for trailer lighting
  • Consider additional safety features like a reversing camera or trailer sway control systems
  • Allow for the extra length and width of your vehicle when merging into traffic
  • Be mindful of the trailer’s tendency to cut in on corners and curves
  • Use a lower gear when going downhill
  • Towing more than one trailer is prohibited
  • People are not permitted to ride in trailers
